GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL COMING TO DICKSON COUNTY

GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL COMING TO DICKSON COUNTY

Dickson, TN — The new school year is bringing an exciting new opportunity for female students across the district as girls’ flag football is expected to make its debut in both middle and high schools. Starting in spring 2025, local athletes will be able to hit the field in a sport that’s gaining momentum across Tennessee.

At the July school board meeting, district officials announced plans to launch girls’ flag football teams at both the middle and high school levels, with hopes of establishing the sport as a permanent fixture. This initiative reflects the district’s commitment to expanding athletic opportunities for young women.

A New Era in Girls’ Athletics

The push for girls’ flag football comes as the sport continues to grow in popularity in nearby districts like Williamson County and Clarksville. With the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) expected to fully sanction the sport for high schools by the 2025-2026 school year, the district sees this as the perfect time to get ahead of the curve.

“This is an incredible opportunity to give our female students a chance to participate in a new and exciting sport,” said Christie Southerland, Director of Dickson County Schools. “By introducing flag football now, we’re laying the groundwork for success when it becomes a sanctioned sport statewide.”

Building from the Ground Up

One of the most innovative aspects of the district’s plan is the inclusion of middle school teams, a move that could set the district apart. While high school teams are becoming increasingly common across Tennessee, few districts are offering the sport at the middle school level. By starting early, the district hopes to develop skilled athletes who can transition seamlessly to high school competition.

The season is set to begin in February 2025, with teams starting practice early into the spring semester. Games are expected to kick off in March.

A Collaborative Effort

The introduction of girls’ flag football has been a carefully considered process involving input from athletic directors, coaches, and district leaders. The startup cost, includes expenses for uniforms, equipment, and coaching supplements.

What’s Next?

If approved, coaches will be hired, equipment purchased, and teams formed over the coming months, with practices slated to begin in early 2025.
